Jon Stewart at the Oscars
I was really looking forward to watching Jon Stewart at the Oscars last night. I think he's hilarious on The Daily Show and loved his exchange during Crossfire. Heck, Jon Stewart was the primary reason I decided to watch the awards show last night.
The verdict? Oscar attendees gave him the cold shoulder.
NBC claims that stars just didn't get his jokes and most Farkers agree- although I think they just like seeing stars made fun of, done well or no. Me? I just thought Stewart's comedy wasn't that on last night. Chris Rock did a better job of roasting last year. Stewart's punchy political one-liners that are so great on his show just don't suit the Oscars that well.
Nothing beats the jokes, singing and dancing when Billy Crystal hosts the show. Especially awesome are the movie montages when Crystal's face is in every nominated film. He makes it feel like a fun, grand event. Too bad he doesn't want to do it anymore.

I only saw clips of Stewart's hosting because I was working last night, but from what I saw I think you're right, he wasn't quite on. I don't really think his style of humor suits such a big event. On the Daily Show most of the big laughs come from his reactions to various news clips they show or satirical comments they make which take the news in a funny direction. This kind of thing isn't the same as Oscar host comedy in which you have to more create jokes out of nothing. His best moments were when he got to do this like after the best song award was handed out.
Also a lot of his humor comes from quite biting political satire. I'm not sure if he was told to keep this out of the show or if he scaled it back himself. Regardless, this is where he excells, by providing intelligent satire of political and social issues - neither of which are really what hte Oscars are concerned with most of the time. The Bjork dress-Cheney comment was the closet he came to political really, but thats not really that political besides involving a political figure.
P.S. It's Jon Stewart, not John.
I remember hearing that Billy Crystal didn't want to commit to the amount of time it takes to prepare for the Oscars mainly because in the same time frame he can make a movie and make much more money.
To that I say to the Academy, pay him what he would make on a movie!
And I say to Billy, if they offer you what you would make on a movie to do the Oscars every year, do it! It's a steady gig and you are great at it!
Oh, and he did try to do some political humour early on but almost all of the jokes went over like a lead balloon.
Right, because Billy Crystal is making movies left and right these days.
