Fireworks!!!

Here's a quick clip of the fireworks Allen and I enjoyed last night at Mel Lastman Square for the Canada Day celebrations. Happy Canada day everybody!

The fireworks (as you can see) were impressive, but brief. As they concluded the sky decided to give us all a free shower. Al and I certainly needed it after a day at Canada's Wonderland. The Top Gun made us feel funny. smiley

I was supposed to be celebrating Canada Day up north, but couldn't at the last minute. Rest assured, I'm thinking of all of my friends & family up there and I'll be up as soon as possible! smiley

Well we have 32 degree weather and 30 km/hr. winds today, so I'm heading out windsurfing. Over 'n out.

Rednecks At Play

blowdupmac.png

This fine Thursday morning, why not watch something get blown up to start your day?

Here's an entertaining video where a guy blows up his G4 Mac. Yup, that's a dead Macintosh computer in that big orange smoke you see above. Before all you Mac haters chime in, the dude promised to do it if enough people would donate money to him to buy... a Mac G5. This guy's video is SO much more entertaining and well done than the dude that smashed his iPod.

Cinevillage

Kitchen_Equipped_005.jpg

I didn't get a chance to blog this last night. Yesterday at work, I got to go to Cinevillage. This is the studio where Alliance Atlantis tapes shows and commercials. While we were there, we got to watch them shoot an episode of Kitchen Equipped. Everyone there was super nice, including the hosts and didn't mind us being on the set. They took the time to answer a ton of questions. Jay is super cute. smiley

The set for The Mom Show was set up too, but nothing was happening there at the time.

Fun day @ work!

Dear Readers

Don't believe anything you read or see today. Including this.

Batman is a tard.
Lindsay Lohan does not change facial expressions.
I have seen some Wookies.

Lost

How awesome was last night's episode of Lost?! Who else thought that Locke might not be getting back up?

It's gonna be sunny and +15 in Toronto today, I'm so happy! smiley

While I love winter, I also love when spring comes along and winter is over. Just because I love winter doesn't mean I want it to last forever. Not that Toronto had much of a winter this year anyway.

V For Vendetta

Tonight I got to see V For Vendetta. It was an intricately planned and executed philosophical comic book thriller. Now there's a genre I wouldn't think could exist, let alone be so brilliant. The upper crust of the movie is about ideas and absolutes. The fun is in near escapes and watching shit get blown up in grand style- complete with fireworks and soundtrack!

The movie borrows heavily from classical music, plays & films and bonds old ideas to modern problems like religious conflicts, terrorism and government dispensed fear as control. In short, "V" the main character, takes up the persona of a 400 year old rebel to fight a totalitarian society. Not a unique story, but told uniquely.

An interesting casting decision was John Hurt who was a very believable "big brother" in the movie. What's so cool is that John Hurt previously played Winston Smith in the movie 1984. Smith was the opposite of the big brother character in a world very similar to that in V for Vendetta. He was the one fighting against big brother and in this story, he IS big brother.

It's a movie that's fun and will make you think. If you go to see it, be prepared for big, dramatic storytelling style. Or maybe I just think it's big & grand 'cause I saw it at an IMAX. smiley

It Worked For Batman

The next James Bond film is going to be a prequel to all other Bond Films. This will mean few gadgets, no Q, no MoneyPenny, a spy who fails with the ladies and hates violence. Read the full story. Does such a film even deserve to be included in the 007 saga?

The same back to beginnings approached worked for the latest Batman movie, but the Batman movies before Batman Begins were utter crap, whereas we've enjoyed decades of successful Bond Films. Pierce Brosnan was a great Bond, so it's not like the formula was no longer resonating with audiences.

So why the switch? Are they writing the film to better suit Daniel Craig who now portrays the character? It sounds like the film is gonna be action filled. I love action movies, so i'm not anticipating it'll be bad, just wondering why they'd depart from the Bond legacy. Why not just make a whole new action character?

Jon Stewart at the Oscars

I was really looking forward to watching Jon Stewart at the Oscars last night. I think he's hilarious on The Daily Show and loved his exchange during Crossfire. Heck, Jon Stewart was the primary reason I decided to watch the awards show last night.

The verdict? Oscar attendees gave him the cold shoulder.

NBC claims that stars just didn't get his jokes and most Farkers agree- although I think they just like seeing stars made fun of, done well or no. Me? I just thought Stewart's comedy wasn't that on last night. Chris Rock did a better job of roasting last year. Stewart's punchy political one-liners that are so great on his show just don't suit the Oscars that well.

Nothing beats the jokes, singing and dancing when Billy Crystal hosts the show. Especially awesome are the movie montages when Crystal's face is in every nominated film. He makes it feel like a fun, grand event. Too bad he doesn't want to do it anymore. smiley

LOTR Musical

A preview for the Lord of the Rings musical/theatre production was spectacular by all accounts that I've read so far. The show is brand new and having its world premiere only in Toronto. Allen and I intend to go see it later in the year.

The New World

newworld.jpg

Collin Ferrell stands poised to strike boredom into the hearts of viewers in The New World.

Last night I had preview tickets to see the movie The New World. We were "treated" to an extended version, which has 16 extra minutes than the theatrical version to be released next Friday will. I was going to write a full review of this movie, but I already wasted 2 1/2 hours of my life on this show, and people at Rotten Tomatoes have already done it:

"Malick's exalted visuals and isolated metaphysical epiphanies are ill-supported by a muddled, lurching narrative, resulting in a sprawling, unfocused account of an epochal historical moment."
-- Todd McCarthy, VARIETY

"By the end of The New World all I had were flashbacks to Mystery Science Theater as I hissed at the screen, Tom Servo style, "End! End!""
-- Devin Faraci, CHUD

"If it were any more obtuse, The New World would be a flipbook where the moving picture was obscured by a thumb drawn over the stick figures."
-- Erik Childress, EFILMCRITIC.COM

Of course, some people like this movie too. Probably the same people who liked The Thin Red Line- another drawn out "epic" by the same writer/director. I place the crappyness of the movie squarely on him. Well, on him and the sound editor who kept cutting to silence and whoever wrote the musical score. Must have taken him weeks to come up with those 3 repetitive notes to play over & over!

Not the acting though, it really wasn't their fault. Maybe that's why nobody really walked out. Q'Orianka Kilcher was in the audience watching the movie with us. They got her up to talk about it before the show started. She had a really shiny sequeny shirt on, so we nicknamed her "Sparkles". She is actually more gorgeous in real life than on the screen, but she's only 15 so stop your brain right there.

At least you can still enter The New World contest if you're not part of my immediate family that is, which disqualifies you and you don't even get a cool movie to watch as a consolation prize. smiley

Funny History Lesson

I haven't done any fact checking on this, but it's funny if it's true...

Abraham Lincoln was elected to Congress in 1846.
John F. Kennedy was elected to Congress in 1946.

Abraham Lincoln was elected President in 1860.
John F. Kennedy was elected President in 1960.

Both were particularly concerned with civil rights.
Both Presidents were shot on a Friday.
Both Presidents were shot in the head.

Lincoln's secretary was named Kennedy.
Kennedy's Secretary was named Lincoln.

Both were assassinated by Southerners.
Both were succeeded by Southerners named Johnson.

Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, was born in 1808.
Lyndon Johnson, who succeeded Kennedy, was born in 1908.

John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated Lincoln, was born in 1839.
Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated Kennedy, was born in 1939.

Both assassins were known by their three names.
Both names are composed of fifteen letters.

Lincoln was shot at the theater named 'Ford.'
Kennedy was shot in a car called 'Lincoln' made by 'Ford.'

Lincoln was shot in a theater and his assassin ran and hid in a warehouse.
Kennedy was shot from a warehouse and his assassin ran and hid in a theater.

Booth and Oswald were assassinated before their trials.

And here's the kicker...

A week before Lincoln was shot, he was in Monroe, Maryland
A week before Kennedy was shot, he was in Marilyn Monroe. smiley

Da Vinci Trailer

This new Da Vinci Code trailer makes the movie look great! It also makes the Smart car product placement looks really really out of place.
